Toulouse is a commune in southwestern France. Capital for almost one hundred years of the Visigoth kingdom and historical capital of Languedoc, it is now the capital of the Occitania region, the Haute-Garonne department, and is the headquarters of Toulouse Métropole. It was also the prefecture of the former Midi-Pyrenees until its disappearance on 1 January 2016.
With 471,941 inhabitants on 1 January 2015, Toulouse is the fourth most populous city in France after Paris, Marseille and Lyon, having gained 101,000 inhabitants over the last 47 years (1968-2015). Its inhabitants are Toulouse and Toulousaines. The urban area of Toulouse has 1,330,954 inhabitants in 2015, which also makes it the fourth largest in the country. With 948 433 inhabitants in 2015, the agglomeration is the fifth, behind that of Lille and ahead of those of Nice and Bordeaux.
City with the characteristic architecture of the cities of the South of France, Toulouse is nicknamed the "pink city" because of the color of the traditional local construction material, the terracotta brick. The development of the violet culture of Toulouse in the nineteenth century makes it an emblem of the city and earned it the nickname "city of violets". It is also, much more rarely, nicknamed the "Cité Mondine" (the Ciutat Mondina in Occitan), in reference to the dynasty of the counts of the city, often called Raymond.
