In Dominant Species, you play one of the 6 main animal families (mammal, bird, reptile, insect, etc.). Your goal is to evolve the species in these families in order to survive and accumulate the most victory points. The game is composed of hexagonal ground tiles, which represent an eco-system (forest, sea, desert, etc.). During the game we will place on the corners of these tiles element markers that represent "resources" (sun, water, grass, etc.). Each of your species will also have up to 6 elements that represent its needs. The species that has the best match between its needs and the resources of the land where it lives will be the dominant species on that land. The notion of domination is fundamental to the game because it is essentially thanks to it that players score victory points.
A game turn is composed of three phases: a planning phase where, in turn, players choose the actions they want to accomplish. An execution phase where actions are resolved in the order of the board. A reinitialization phase to check the extinction of certain species and prepare a new tour.
The different actions available allow you to evolve your species (adaptation, speciation, regression), move it, attack other species, dominate a terrain, add new tiles or new elements, etc. Thus, with each round, the game board is constantly evolving. Each time a species becomes dominant, the player chooses a dominant card and performs its action. These cards give advantages for the game (victory point, new species, etc.)
The game ends when a player chooses the "Ice Age" card. The one with the most victory points wins the game.
