The third largest island in the western Mediterranean (8,700 km2), Corsica is a real "mountain in the sea". Monte Cinto culminates at 2,700 meters above sea level and the island of beauty forms a freshwater castle in the Mediterranean. Divided in two by a central mountainous ridge, it is composed of two distinct regions: The beyond the mountains, turned towards peninsular Italy and the beyond the mountains subject to external penetrations. Its history has left a remarkable artistic and cultural heritage, from the megalithic civilization to the baroque art. With a rich language, it also expresses itself through song and musical expression, its famous Moorish flag. Its atypical economy, where the industry remains embryonic, is especially turned towards tourism.
Corsica has given birth to great men whose fame has crossed the sea, whether Pascal Paoli or Napoleon Bonaparte. Corsicans have been shaped by a turbulent history and a difficult life. Death is one of the main preoccupations in Corsican society, like the mazzeri, peddlers of rites and knowledge going back to time immemorial. For a long time land of emigration, the island has today stopped its exodus towards the continent. It continues to seduce by the beauty of its landscapes, the warmth and hospitality of its inhabitants.
