In the past 2000 years, the city of Maastricht has been besieged by many different peoples. Originally, the Romans built the "Castellum" on the left bank of the Meuse to defend their bridge and their encampment. This "Castellum" Roman has since disappeared but the new fortifications of Maastricht were put to the test in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries by the troops of Philip II of Spain, the army of the United Provinces of Frédéric-Henri d Orange-Nassau, and twice by the French army.
