In Habitats, each player builds a large animal park without cages or fences. The animals in your park need their natural habitats: grassland, bush, rocks or lakes. The zebra needs a large area of grass and some water next to it, for example, while the bat needs rocks, bush and water, the deer needs bush and grass, and the crocodile especially needs water. There is a snake, baboon, bee, elephant, otter, lizard, turtle, eagle, meerkat, scorpion, pig, catfish, rhinoceros, etc., each with their own landscape requirements - 68 different animals in total. Each player starts their individual park with an entry tile, and is represented on the animal tile market by a ceramic figurine (or a wooden ranger meeple in some editions). On a turn, a player takes the tile to his left, right or front, moves his meeple to the space just vacated, and then draws a tile to place it where his meeple started his turn.
When you add an animal tile to your park, you also add its main landscape - the animal's base space - to your park. When you place this new animal, its own piece of landscape can help meet the needs of your other animals, for example, the water on a hippo tile meeting the water need of the adjacent otter. So, satisfying each animal's desire for land becomes an increasingly difficult task with each tile you add. In addition to expanding your park with different types of landscapes, flora and animals, you can improve its profitability by building additional entrance roads, hiking spots and guard towers.
Habitats lasts for three seasons, each season giving each player 6-9 new tiles for their park. The player who best achieves the season's objective receives bonus points, with fewer points for second and third place. At the end of the game, each player scores points for each tile in their park according to how well they met the requirements of that tile. Whoever gets the most points wins!
