The Hunt for the Ring is played in two acts using the double-sided board and with many different materials and rules. During Act 1, the Hobbits prepare for their journey and head for Bree, across the easternmost border of the Shire. The Ringbearer records Frodo's movements secretly, while the Ring Spectres try to find him by guessing which way he will go.
During Act 2, Frodo leaves Bree and heads for Rivendell, led by Great Steps. This time Frodo's path is automatically generated and the Ringbearer controls Gandalf the Grey, who will try to protect the Ring and defeat the Nazgûl. The Ring-bearer wins if Frodo brings the One Ring to Rivendell before it is corrupted by the Shadow. The Ringwraith players win if Frodo is corrupted at any time during the game.
