A herd of mammoths crosses the grasslands to drink from a crystal blue river. Cunning hunters watch from the trees, waiting for the right moment to strike. Menhirs, monuments of stone, encircle a peaceful forest clearing, while fishermen set nets in a remote lake. A Journey into the Past. Thousands of years before the people of Carcassonne built mighty walls and castles, prehistoric tribes roamed the land in search of resources to ensure their survival. Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers combines the tile-laying principle of the original game with new thematic features and scoring rules. Instead of building a medieval landscape with towns, roads, fields and monasteries, players place tiles filled with natural features such as forests, rivers, lakes and meadows, which they claim and complete to score points.
Surviving the Stone Age. Scoring will seem familiar to seasoned Carcassonne players, but a few key differences will make Hunters and Gatherers a unique game experience. For example, players can place a tribesman (a meeple) to claim grasslands just as they might claim a field, but grasslands vary in point value depending on the types and numbers of animals present. Similarly, rivers will have a similar score to roads, but the number of fish in the river system will increase the points you earn for completing it. Forests with menhirs will also give players a bonus. When a player completes a forest with a menhir, he takes a bonus menhir tile, places it and resolves its effect as an extra action. Menhir tiles can help you get bonus points on features you have claimed, or even drive animals out of the meadows with a devastating forest fire. Place the menhir tiles strategically to make the most of your bonus action!
Since its release in 2002, Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers has become one of the most popular standalone versions of the Carcassonne series. The new edition of Hunters & Gatherers includes the same gameplay, plus updated graphics and additional menhir tiles with unique effects.
