Although considered a light unit by Westeros standards, pikemen fight in close ranks according to ancient battle doctrines. A phalanx of immaculately trained men standing with spears down and shields forward is a virtually unbreakable formation in the face of a cavalry charge, and even infantry units have the greatest difficulty breaking through the wall of spears. While it is difficult to take such a unit by surprise, a seasoned commander will need to ensure that it is not surrounded, as its flanks are highly vulnerable.
