They have come to this planet, and they have chosen you. They raised your people and promised great prosperity. They provided the wisdom and resources to build your cities on high. They taught you culture, science and warfare. They promised knowledge to all who were willing to learn. Come, Archon, guide your citizens to victory, under the watchful eye of the Builders, our benefactors from beyond the heavens. In Origins: First Builders, you are an Archon, guiding a population of freemen, influencing the construction of buildings and monuments, scaling the three mighty temples of the zodiac, and competing in an arms race, all in an effort to leave the greatest mark on the ancient history of mankind.
You start the game with a city consisting of only two building tiles: the Agora tile and the Palace tile. As the game progresses, your city will grow in size and power by adding new building tiles. Each tile has a special ability that is triggered when it is first added to a city and when it closes a district. Your position on the military track indicates the rewards you receive when you attack and your chances of becoming the first player. Origins: First Builders is played over several rounds, with a round ending only after each player has passed. If an endgame condition has not yet been triggered, the game continues with a new round. On your turn, you perform one of the following actions: Visit, Close a district, Build, Increase your population or Pass.
Visit a meeting site with your workers to gain resources and extra citizen or speaker dice, advance on the zodiac temple tracks (and potentially gain zodiac cards), and advance and attack on the military track. Close a district, earning victory points (VPs) and possibly gold for following the district card building pattern, extra bonuses based on the buildings you activate, and extra VPs at the end of the game based on the value of the citizen die you use to close the district. Build a tower level to increase your end game score based on the height of the towers and the corresponding coloured dice you use to close your districts. Increase your population. Pass.
The game ends at the end of the round when one or more of the following conditions have been met: At most three colours of tower discs are still in stock. There is no gold left on top of a district card. No citizen dice of the correct colour can be added to the citizen supply. A player has moved his three zodiac discs to the top space of each temple track. The temple area is divided into three tracks: the sea temple, the forest temple and the mountain temple. You only score points for your two lowest value temples, and once all the points have been added up, the player with the most VP wins.
