Welcome to the Encyclopedia! It's 1739, and as budding naturalists and adventurers, you've been hired by the Comte de Buffon - Darwin's predecessor - to help him create the first encyclopedia of natural history. To do this, you will have to conduct research, organise ambitious expeditions and publish studies on the world's most fascinating creatures! Encyclopedia is a dice-based worker placement game. At the beginning of each round, you will draw and roll dice and place them on your board. These dice can then be used to perform an action each turn, depending on their colour and value. Your action may be to prepare your expeditions by going to the embassy, visit the bank to raise money or hire your research team at the university. Once you are ready to go, you choose the Animals cards you wish to study, then organise expeditions to observe them in their natural habitat. Once you have completed your research, you can publish your findings to become the biggest contributor to the Encyclopedia. Each publication will earn you victory points, and at the end of the game you will score points based on the collections of Animals and research you have amassed during the game. The naturalist with the most points wins!
Encyclopedia was designed by Olivier Melison and Eric Dubus, the authors of Dominations: Road to Civilization and Museum. This expert worker placement game brings fascinating new elements to the genre, offering multiple paths to victory. The game also offers a multitude of ways to counteract the random element of your dice rolls. As well as being able to spend different tokens to change the value or colour of a die, players have more than just their own die to choose from, as other players' dice can also be used! Taking a die from another player's board costs nothing, but the targeted player gains a bonus. The game's beautiful theme - with beautifully illustrated animal cards - fits perfectly with its mechanics, making the rules easy to understand and allowing you to get straight to work on the perfect strategy.
