Freshwater Fly is the second standalone game in a series from designer Brian Suhre that integrates modern game mechanics with the surprisingly rich and uniquely refreshing world of angling. In Freshwater Fly, you'll encounter a rushing mountain stream full of fish, armed only with a rod, reel and a selection of flies. To catch fish and earn valuable hit points, you'll need to perform a series of tactical manoeuvres while applying a deliberate and evolving strategy. Start by examining the ever-changing hatchlings in the current, and tie a fly to match your target fish at the right time and at the right turn in the river. Then choose to cast upstream to drift your fly with the current and get extra bites on your line, or try your luck with a precise cast for a perfect catch. Either way, it's wise to cast close to the rocks to improve your technique and discover new fishing techniques, while keeping your finesse reserve charged for the next challenge. Your reel, which physically spins, gives you different bonuses when you pull your line, depending on how aggressively you choose to fight the fish you've hooked. For example, if you apply a drag, you'll negate the force of the fish, but by leveraging your momentum, you'll get a unique action that will set you up perfectly for your next cast.
At its core, Freshwater Fly is a dice-drawing, material-gathering game with elements of creative puzzle solving and luck pushing. Each turn, you select a die from the dice pool and assign it an action related to the fishing manoeuvre you wish to perform. Higher value dice usually get you more powerful actions, but accumulating lower value dice can earn you free turns. The dice you choose will also unlock or multiply various bonus actions that you can use to solve the most difficult fishing puzzles in unique and rewarding ways. The sets of fish and flies you collect will help you achieve personal and common goals, but to achieve victory you must focus on the goals that overlap in the most valuable way, while not falling behind in your total number of fish. The game ends when only one player catches a seventh fish, success points are awarded and the winner is declared.
