Autumn is not the best time to climb scaffolding in Moscow, but it's always much better than doing it in winter. Tsar Ivan wants to see results and our team will prove to him that we are the best builders in the city. We are sure to finish these decorative arches with the most brilliant stones and secure our place on the government's list of trusted workers. The Red Cathedral is a strategic Euro board game in which players take on the role of building teams. Their task is to work together to build St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, as ordered by Ivan the Terrible. However, only one of them will be able to win the Tsar's favour. During the game, players can perform one of three actions: assign a section of the cathedral, send resources to that section to build it, or go to the game board to get more resources. Each of these actions has its own mechanism and requires players to pay close attention to what other players are doing. When the sections of the cathedral are allocated, the players take possession of the spaces in each of the columns that make up their section. The more sections they build and the more of each section they complete with its own tower, the more points they will receive at the end of the game.
Players can send resources to the cathedral sections they have claimed. When they complete each of these sections, they get rewards of money and prestige points. They will also be able to install decorations on the completed sections to gain even more recognition from the Tsar. This part of the game also acts as a clock, as once a player has finished building their sixth section, the game ends. The game board shows us the iconic roundabout of The Red Cathedral. This is where players get all the types of resources needed to complete their work on the cathedral, as well as to curry favour with guilds and professionals to make the most of their trip to the market. In the centre circle, players choose the die they wish to use and move forward as many spaces as indicated on the top of the die, in order to obtain the resources indicated in the space designated by the die.
The Red Cathedral is a very accessible game in terms of its rules, as it is very easy to understand the different levels of the game, but it remains very interesting in terms of strategy. It will certainly appeal to those who are more interested in the challenge of trying to strategically optimise their position in each game than in the complexity of the rules.
