It's race day in Belcastel, and with the right combination of food and luck, you'll ride your mount to victory and claim the pot of gold. The Grand Prix of Belcastel features similar gameplay to that of The Charlatans of Belcastel, with each player building up their own bag of tokens during the game, then drawing those tokens as they attempt to progress to victory. Each player starts the game with their horse at the beginning of the track and a bag containing four dream tokens, a yellow 1, two red 1 and a red 2. Each turn you draw a token from your bag and place it on your animal board. If you draw a coloured token, place the token on your animal board, move your animal along the track as many spaces as the number on the token, and then perform the effect of that colour: red tokens get you 1 to 3 rubies, yellow tokens allow you to roll a die for a random bonus, green tokens allow you to take another turn or return a drawn token to your bag, and blue tokens allow you to move an extra token or upgrade it.
If you draw a dream token, place it on one of the clouds on your animal board. After drawing and placing a third dream token, use all the rubies on your board to buy new tokens - not two of the same colour, mind you - and then place these new tokens and any previously drawn tokens in your bag. Keep taking turns until someone reaches the end of the track and wins! Grand Prix de Belcastel includes a double-sided game board for a shorter or longer race; orange and purple tokens that grant new powers, such as advancing as many spaces as the number of rubies you have; and double-sided action boards for each type of coloured token, allowing you to play with different sets of actions from game to game.
