The Night's Watch vanguards scour the wilderness north of the Wall for enemies who are gathering to launch assaults on their strongholds. Once in battle, the Vanguards function well as medium cavalry, being particularly good at flanking manoeuvres and ambushes. One might think that mounted troops would not blend easily into the landscape, but the Vanguard Rangers know the great taiga like few others. Thick copses of trees, forbidding valleys and even slight depressions in the terrain offer portions of territory from which to launch devastating surprise attacks. Like all cavalry, Vanguards must remain mobile, lest they get bogged down and destroyed.
