The Tōkaidō line of the Shinkansen began construction in 1959 with the aim of inaugurating the fastest train at the time, just before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In Shinkansen: Zero-Kei, players take on the role of its builders. They will be in charge of the construction of this historic railway line and all its stations. They will also be able to help the Olympic venues in their preparations for the Games. The player who is most effective in this role will be declared the winner.
Each turn in a game of Shinkansen, you will build your own high-speed train, with each car card you add to your train giving you an action or ability. These actions will mainly allow you to build tracks and stations, help prepare Olympic venues and obtain new railcar cards. Car cards are associated with the cities through which the line passes. If you manage to build them in the right order, you will be rewarded with victory points. After five rounds, corresponding to the five years of construction of the line, the player with the most victory points wins.
