When Alexander the Great died in 323 BC, he left no clear heir to the vast empire he had conquered. Shortly after his death, Macedonian generals began to wage war among themselves over who would be the regent or successor of Alexander's empire. By 305 BC, they had given up the succession and began to carve out their own kingdoms. Successors is a four-player game based on these wars.
Successors was first published in 1997 by Avalon Hill. A few years later, a second edition of the rules was published, offering more options for Tyche cards. Successors III is based on the rules of Successors II and the expansion cards that were included in the board game. Minor improvements have been made to make the game easier to play and increase the fun. The map is very similar to the original with some minor changes around Macedonia. The counters have the same great graphics for generals and the new GMT graphics for combat units and control markers. The Tyche maps have received the most changes - almost all of the maps have had some minor modifications and a few new maps have been added.
In addition to the changes, the rules have been cleaned up and improved. Years of questions and answers on Consimworld have clarified the rules. The rules also include strategy tips from several long-time players who have played the game one after the other, as well as a more complete game example.
