Terraforming Mars: Expedition Ares - Discovery adds four new mechanics to the base of Expedition Ares: rewards, milestones, enhanced phase cards and wild tags. Rewards are endgame points that are awarded to the player with the most things. Three rewards are drawn at the beginning of the game so that players know what will reward them at the end of the game. The player with the most of these items wins 5 VPs, the second place wins 2 VPs. Milestones are VPs that are awarded during the game. They are awarded to the player who first reaches the stage in question. Milestones are worth 3 VP at the end of the game.
Some new project and company cards allow players to improve their phase cards. Each phase card has two different versions that players can choose from when upgrading them. The upgrade gives the player a better bonus when choosing that phase. Some new project cards have a 'wild' label. Whenever a player reveals this card, either from the deck (because of an effect) or from his hand because he is going to play it, he chooses the label he wants to give it. Tokens are used to keep track of the chosen label for the rest of the game.
