Zombicide: Gear Up is a cooperative flip-and-write game set in the world of Zombicide. To start, each player takes a survivor card, which lists four weapons, as well as damage, armour and ammo. Determine the level of play (easy to nightmarish), then give each player the appropriate number of random ordinary and special zombie cards to place next to the "third street level" on their card. Shuffle the ten turn cards, then arrange nine of them in a row, placing seven spawn cards next to the last seven of these cards.
On a turn, reveal the next turn card, which shows the colour of the weapon activated by each player. Each weapon has a 'hit shape' (usually a polyomino), and you must fit the hit shape into the outline of a zombie to use it, without overlapping with damage you have already inflicted. Some zombies may then advance towards the players, moving from their third street to their second. If a zombie is on your "first street" and advances, you take damage equal to the unmarked red stars on that card. If you mark ammunition or armour on a zombie, you circle these symbols on your survivor card; you can spend ammunition to mark a single zombie space, and you can spend armour instead of taking damage.
After the third round, you reveal the first spawn card, which will put more zombies into play, with the players collectively deciding how to add these cards to their third street. When you mark the last space on a zombie card, remove it from play, then upgrade one of your weapons, perhaps gaining the ability to use it more than once or gaining armour as you cover red stars. After nine rounds, shuffle the ten tower cards, then lay out nine of them, along with the level 1 and 2 boss cards under the last seven tower cards. Place the boss in front of a player. During a turn, if the boss is in front of you or if you have an activated long-range weapon, you can attack the boss instead of the zombies near you. If you defeat the boss before the end of the ninth turn of the second round, you win; otherwise - or if a player is killed by damage - then you lose the game.
For Zombicide: Gear Up's solitaire mode, take the companion cards of three survivors who are not in play and place them next to your survivor card. When a tower card has a smiley face on it, you can activate the power of one of your companions, in addition to your own weapon. Each companion can only be used once per turn.
