At the beginning of the war, few nations had imagined that events would force them to fight outside Europe. Thus, when the fighting spread to Africa, little or nothing had been done to prepare for a campaign in the desert. The leadership, ingenuity and resolve of these men who fought under such difficult conditions are recorded in history. More than any other army, it was the British forces of the Commonwealth, with their presence in the four corners of the world, that possessed these qualities!
