This latest volume in our first series of Battle Maps for Memoir '44 features two new Overlord missions, six half-tracks, six jeeps and four standard scenarios. The objective of Operation Jubilee was to show that the Allies were capable of capturing and then holding a deep water port. The Allied troops, mainly Canadians, could not have imagined that the operation would run short in just a few hours... A dense network of barbed wire barred the landing beach, lined with high cliffs. Nevertheless, the first barges landed without too many casualties: Essex's Scottish Regiment landed on Red Beach and Hamilton's Light Infantry Regiment on White Beach, where the soldiers were able to take shelter behind a seawall. Alas, the tanks of the 14th Canadian Tank Battalion arrived late. Moreover, once ashore, they could hardly move, their tracks skating on the pebbles on the beach. The Royal Canadian Regiment, which was due to land on Blue Beach, also arrived late: pinned down as soon as they arrived by hellfire, its men could not capture the cliffs overlooking the landing beaches. German forces were now sweeping the entire beach with their fire, inflicting heavy casualties on the Canadians. The casino and surrounding dugouts changed hands several times, but to no avail. By the time the order to retreat was given, 60% of the men who had landed had been killed, wounded or captured by the enemy. It was a painful lesson for the Allies, but the lessons they learned allowed them to prepare for the Normandy landings that would take place two years later.
After crushing the British defences at Gazala, Rommel and his Afrikakorps advanced towards Tobruk. The town had held a nine-month siege last year and was now defended by General Klopper's 2nd South African Division. The defensive perimeter consisted of barbed wire, minefields and reinforced infantry positions, with some tanks and artillery in support. On 20 June, under the cover of morning mist, German Engineers opened channels in the defences. When the fog lifted, the British were caught under an intense artillery barrage followed by aerial bombardment, then German tanks and infantrymen rushed in. Their advance was halted by a brave counter-attack of artillery-backed armour, but by noon the Germans had already reorganized to resume their advance. The Kings Cross eventually fell, opening the road to Tobruk. Klopper, stunned, could only raise the white flag to signal the surrender of his troops.
Four standard scenarios are provided in addition to these two Overlord scenarios: In Rommel's Hook and Raid on Barqa, off-road cars will be essential keys to victory, while in the Atlas Panzers and Le-Mesnil-Adelée, you'll have to use your half-tracks wisely to win. Detailed rules for these two new units are also included in this expansion. If you don't have the Overlord expansion, you can play with this expansion thanks to 2 copies of Memoir' 44. All four standard scenarios require the Terrain Pack and/or Mediterranean Theater expansions. Purists who would like to use the British miniatures for the proposed Overlord scenarios will need two Mediterranean Theater expansions.
