Central Europe in the 1670's. The plague that had been raging since 1348 was finally defeated. The civilized world is being rebuilt. People are refurbishing their thatched cottages and renovating them. Fields have to be ploughed, cultivated and finally harvested. The memory of the famine of the dark years led mankind to eat more meat (a habit still in force in our modern society). It is with a modest hut and a piece of land to exploit that our farmer and his wife (for the moment without children) will start the game. During each of the 14 rounds of the game, players will perform exactly one action per family member. The list of available actions (e.g. collecting wood or expanding the family) will increase as the game progresses, with one action possibility added to each round.
A wise choice among these actions will surely lead the family to a more prosperous life: births, bigger house, fertile fields, livestock. Since each action can only be performed by one player, a player can considerably hinder his opponents by placing his farmers on the most coveted squares. Of course, players should think about expanding their family quickly in order to perform more actions. But they must also find food for their offspring.
At the end of the game, the winner is the player who has best arranged his farmyard. Points will be awarded for fields, pastures and stables, as well as for grain, vegetables, sheep, boars and oxen. For each square in the yard that is not used, one point is lost. Players also earn extra points for the size and quality of their homes, for each member of their family and for the skill and amenity cards they have played.
