We only have to look down from the starry sky to the planet to see that beauty surrounds us! The biomes of planet Earth are as diverse and wonderful as the living creatures that inhabit them. Ideally, you will see more than your fair share in the Ecosphere strategy card game. In this game, you collect cards that represent your notes on eight different biomes: subtropical desert, savanna, rainforest, chaparral, temperate grassland, temperate forest, taiga and arctic tundra. You start the game with three random cards in your hand; each card represents one of the eight biome types and is numbered from 1 to 6. Eight cards are placed on six clouds in the centre of the table, with the deck to the left of cloud #1 and a sun card to the right of #6.
On a turn, you play a card from your hand on the cloud with the same number, then pick up a pile of your choice to the left or right of the pile you played on. If you choose a cloud to the left towards the deck, you add the cards from that cloud to your hand, then draw an extra card from the deck and add it to your hand. If you choose right to the sun, you add those cards to your "journal", which is your card collection. Cards from the same biome go into the same pile, and you build piles from left to right in your journal as you collect cards from new biomes, these piles being numbered from 1 to 8. To end your turn, you draw a card from the deck to fill the empty space in the cloud.
When you reach the 'end of game' card in the deck, end the round, then play an extra round. Each player then scores points for their journal in two ways: Score for your two biomes that have the most cards, with each card in those biomes worth as many points as the number in the deck. (In other words, whatever two biomes you start collecting last, you want to collect a lot of them because those cards will be worth the most points). ) Then you remove a card from each biome from left to right until you find an empty space or no more biomes; the set is worth 1 to 36 points depending on the number of cards it contains. Then you create another set by collecting cards from left to right, etc. until your leftmost biome is empty. Whoever scores the most points wins! Will your research notebook on the world's biomes be deep and diverse enough to set you apart from your peers?
