Maui locals and tourists alike head to the beach to find a nice place to lay their towels and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Hawaiian ocean. In Maui, you must find and place beachgoers on your sand to create pleasing patterns, while placing their towels near the ocean or in the shade of trees or umbrellas to earn the most points. However, getting too close to either of these areas is risky and can ruin their plans! In the game, you have your own beach board that can accommodate 13 towels, the board has seven rows in which the towels can be placed, and during set-up, you randomly place eight umbrellas in designated spots on your board. Each player places a random towel in the leftmost column on their board; each towel has three different designs. Place six random tiles in the two rows of the market and a sand dollar in each row.

On your turn, you can either take all the sand dollars from either market row or take a towel from the market; towels cost 0, 1 or 2 sand dollars, which are placed in the market row. When you place a towel, you must match at least one pattern with the rightmost towel on your beach board and you want to match as many patterns as possible. For each match, you advance the score marker for that pattern from 1 to 3 squares on the scoreboard; the closer you are to the ocean or shade, the more points you score, but if you place any part of the towel outside the playing area, you are penalised. If you cover an umbrella, you receive its bonus, whether it is advancing the score marker by one pattern or receiving one of the two types of beads.

When someone places a towel in the last column of their beach board, you end the round and see who has scored the most points with the remaining patterns, beads and sand dollars, each worth one point. Instead of playing with umbrellas, you can turn your beach board over to find a septet of sand crabs. Each time you cover a crab with a towel, the crab crawls onto that part of the towel, costing you both the pattern and a few points.
