The Second World War was probably the greatest ideological war ever fought, as well as the most extensive armed conflict in history. This explains the acts of resistance that sprang up spontaneously in the occupied countries, even in the heart of Germany. In 1939, Poland began to collect weapons and information about the German army. In June 1940, leaflets were distributed calling on the French to refuse the armistice. In May 1941, two young Greeks managed to take down a swastika flag flying over Athens...
Little by little, the resistance movements of each nation became more structured and powerful, often trained and equipped by the SOE (Special Operations Executive) set up by the British. Many forms of resistance emerged thanks to the courage of men and women who were prepared to risk their lives for freedom: underground newspapers, strikes, intelligence gathering, espionage, escape networks or sabotage. Towards the end of the conflict, almost 200,000 members of the French Forces of the Interior (FFI) took part in the fight to liberate France by harassing German road and rail convoys heading for Normandy.
