A Rokugan samurai who does not vibrate at the announcement of these words is not a samurai worthy of the name and would do better to abandon his blades at the edge of the road. The duel highlights many aspects of a samurai's life: his mastery of the sword, his courage and willpower, his personal honor and his loyalty to his family and his clan. It is an experience that brings its existence back to its essence ... which captures it in the brevity of a perfect movement.
The duel is not only reserved for bushi. The shugenja regulate the affairs of honor among themselves since the dawn of the Empire by the rites of taryu-jiai. The courtiers, meanwhile, use multiple methods (less violent but equally dangerous) to settle their different staff and policies with their rivals.
The Art du Duel includes all the dueling practices in the Rokugan Empire including: the Iaijutsu duel, the Phoenix Clan naginata duel, the Tsuruchi family archery competitions, the equestrian competitions of the Unicorn clan, Sumai wrestling of Crab and Badger clans, Ikoma family speaking contests, Doji family debates and even Crab Clan drinking competitions.
